Auditions went very well. We had callbacks and really confirmed some of our initial thoughts. It’s always good to hear your words read by others and I was pleasantly surprised by the actors that read. During lunch for the 1st auditions on Oct 4, we had a great, collaborative effort on the script, the characters, etc. Surprisingly, there was a long (really, really long) conversation about the stage of relationship between Ian and Jenn. Are they at 3 months? 6 months? Have they slept together? What does this all mean to the pilot and, thus, the series?

All very interesting comments. I had my ideas, others had theirs. In the end, I had to let go of my preconception for the better of the series. There wasn’t contention, but the discussion was enlightening in that people take one line of dialogue and decipher to mean different things, based on their personal experiences. The script for the 2nd auditions ran 10 pages and introduced a twist at the end that Rob and I had discussed.  It allowed for some really great reads that let us fully analyze the actors as well as the characters.

We want context, conflict and rich lives for our characters. We want to bring something very real and relatable to the medium. And, that’s what writing’s about: bring your experiences to the script, to the characters and don’t be afraid to allow them to experience different things. Let them fully function in the realm of their world and the worlds of the other characters. If you don’t, you will most certainly fail. Will we? Will I?
