Given that Jenn is based on a real person, you think it’d be easy to form the basis of her character. Ummm, no. As pointed out in an earlier post, we had to balance between the reality of Jenn and the privacy concerns of someone who is working hard to define herself. In the end, the character of Jenn became a very fictionalized version of her world, her relationships and her struggles. This was all very interesting and I have no idea how writers do two-hour biographical pics. It must be very difficult to draw that line as between “what I hear and see” vs. “what the audience needs to hear and see”. In the end, it comes down to the story and what is best for that.

Ian was introduced because that’s a very natural role for someone to counter a 20-something social media expert. To have him be a VC guy, someone who thinks mainly in black-and-white and is older was really based around the need for conflict. You instantly see where these two will have problems in their nascent relationship and that’s fun to write (and, hopefully, fun to watch). The Ian character is someone I (Darren) can easily identify with. I have an MBA, I’m very analytical and I don’t really understand the social media scene (but, I’m learning). But, it’s not about writing “me” into a character. It’s about enriching the story for everyone (characters, actors, writer and, especially, the viewers).

Larissa was initially named Wendy. Her formation came about due to … you guessed it… a need for conflict. Conflict builds drama and from that, comes comedy. I instantly felt a need for what I call a “viral rival” to Jenn; someone who would stir the pot and create obstacles to her goals. She’s been a blast to cast for. I can’t wait for you to meet her.

Dave is someone that many people can relate to, we think. Whether you’re a guy or a woman, there’s a secret crush and a line that can’t be crossed. Moreover, it gives us a great visual experience to the pilot in that we will view things through Dave’s eyes, and therefore, his camera. Both should greatly enhance… you guessed it… the story.

We’ve discussed other characters, but really, we’ll let the story and audience reaction drive that process. It has to be organic and relatable; two qualities we’re really striving for with this project.
