This question was never easier to answer once I had to get in front of the camera. I’m in a scene as ‘guy walking down the sidewalk’ and had to take direction. Cody was great, but I simply didn’t want to be there. However, the scene that I wrote called for it and we needed someone that fit the role. I took one for the team. Now, I’m looking at the rough cut of that scene and hating it even more. It’s not my thing. It’s a lot more complicated than I imagined it’d be. I couldn’t remember how fast to walk, when to look at my watch, how to bump into Ali. It was frustrating. But, it certainly did give me a new sense of appreciation for the actors on our show - and everywhere else. If it looks easy, it’s because they make it look easy. So, I will stay behind my desk and the camera…observing and taking notes. In my first screenwriting class, the instructor asked us why we wanted to write. I will forever remember my reply, “For the fortune, not the fame”. That’s why I write. So I don’t have to act. And, I think the world’s a better place for that (ha ha).
